Rising Student and Eastern Sporting Union have emerged as the two teams to qualify for the main round of the Indian Women’s League expected to begin in Nov-Dec. Both teams remained unbeaten in the Qualifiers that took place from October 17 to October 26.
After Delhi’s Sudeva Moonlight decided to withdraw from the Qualifiers, it was down to 9 teams fighting for two spots in the main tournament. Earlier divided into 2 groups of 5 teams, now we have a group of 5 and another of 4 teams. The table topper from each group was to qualify for the finals of the Indian Women’s League.
From Group A, Rising Student emerged victorious after defeating the undefeated a super-strong Alakhpura 2-0 in a virtual final. The match stayed 0-0 at half time and had it been a draw, Bhiwani’s Alakhpura would have made the cut on the basis of a much better goal difference. Goals from Jabamani and Pyari in the 52nd and 90th minute respectively gave Rising Pune the win and the ticket to the finals of the Indian Women’s League.
In Group B, the star studded Eastern Sporting Union came from a goal down to win 4-1 against KRYPHSA. Indian Women’s football legend Bembem Devi scored a brace.
The qualifiers saw over 100 goals scored in a mere 15 matches. Teams from UP and Royal Wahingdoh conceded the most number of goals. The highest scoring match was between Alakhpura and Royal Wahingdoh which ended 18-0 in favour of the team from Haryana.
Both Rising Student and Eastern Sporting Union have been undefeated in the Qualifiers and would hope to keep the form along in the final stage of the Indian Women’s League where 8 other women teams from I-League and ISL clubs await them. There is still no confirmation on which teams will participate but it is likely to be announced soon.
